Tasting #34 - Reserve Grand Veneur Côtes du Rhône

Name: Reserve Grand Veneur Côtes du Rhône
Variety: 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Cinsault
Region: Rhone Valley
Country: France
Year: 2010
Price: $15

Wine Store Review: As for their other values, the 2010 Grand Veneur Cotes du Rhone Reserve (70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Cinsault) displays loads of ripe flavors. It is very concentrated for a Cotes du Rhone, and is actually an amazing wine. Classic garrigue, black cherry liqueur, lavender, licorice and spice box are all present in this fullbodied, intense, and rich Cotes du Rhone. This is a sensational effort to drink over the next 4-5 years, although it might last even longer.

My Review: This wine was dark red in color with aromas of cherry and licorice on the nose. It was smooth and medium-bodied. I got cherry and red berry flavors. This wine finished dry with a long aftertaste.

Tasting #33 - Lobetia Tempranillo

Name: Lobetia
Variety: Tempranillo
Region: La Mancha
Country: Spain
Year: 2011
Price: $10

Wine Store Review: Organically and naturally grown and made, this wine allows the varietal and the terroir to stand out cleanly. It shows a nice cherry color with a violet shade because of its youth. Red berries and cherries on the nose. On the palate it is fresh, slightly astringent, and harmonious with a long finish.

My Review:  This wine is a reddish purple in color with a peppery and cherry aroma. I got a little spicy, peppery taste along with cherries. It was medium dry and thin. It was an ok wine that I'd rate 6 out of 10.

Tasting #32 - Lobetia Chardonnay

Name: Lobetia
Variety: Chardonnay
Region: La Mancha
Country: Spain
Year: 2011
Price: $10

Wine Store Review: Organically and naturally grown and made, this wine allows the varietal and the terroir to stand out cleanly. Clean, bright color with a greenish-yellow tone. On the nose, exotic fruits like pineapple. Full flavored, fresh, with good acidity in the mouth, it finishes with tropical fruits.

My Review: I got floral and pineapple on the nose of this pale yellow wine. It has seen oak barrel time as there was a distinct malo-lactic taste which came across as a little yeasty to me. It was sweet and also a tropical fruit taste. Pretty good wine overall. I liked the oak aged characteristics of this wine and would rate it a 7 out of 10.

Tasting #31 - Trattoria Busa alla Torre da Lele

Name: Trattoria Busa alla Torre da Lele
Variety: Pinto Grigio
Region: Veneto
Country: Italy
Price: $8

Wine Store Review: Named after the famous restaurant in Italy! This is their house white wine! Coppery color from extended skin contact, round and rich texture with juicy melon aromas and flavors with a sweet fennel note on the ultra smooth finish. Great value Grigio! Drink now.

My Review: This wine was a very pale yellow and almost clear. On the nose there were citrus aromas and hints of a grass component. It was a light bodied wine along with being sweet and acidic. I got generic citrus flavors and it finished a little dry. Good wine and I rate it a 7 out of 10.

Tasting #30 - Ruffino Chianti

Name: Ruffino
Variety: Chianti
Region: Tuscany DOCG
Country: Italy
Year: 2011
Price: $9

Winemaker's Review: Chianti Ruffino is characterized by delicate yet steady floral notes of violet which is characteristic of Sangiovese wines. The 2011 vintage offers deep, fruity hints of plum together with intense notes of sweet cherry leading to a lightly spicy finish. Medium-bodied, Chianti Ruffino is characterized by a marvelous freshness, making for a very pleasant and easy to drink wine, with a lingering, fruity finish.

My Review: Medium to dark red in color. On the nose I'm getting cherries with lots of plum. The wine is sweet with cherry flavors and it finished a little dry. Enjoyed this wine and I'd give it a 8 out of 10.

This wine was tasted with lasagna. It paired well although it wasn't anything to brag about. The tomato sauce in the lasagna helped balance the tannins in the wine which brought out more of the fruit flavors.

Tasting #29 - Crane Lake Petite Sirah

Name: Crane Lake
Variety: Petite Sirah
Region: Napa and Sonoma, CA
Country: USA
Year: 2011
Price: $5

Wine Blog Review:  Inky, almost black, purple in color with aromas of blackberry jam. In the mouth, the wine is soft and very fruity with blueberry pie filling flavors a bit of white pepper. Some might consider this to be too simple and slightly flabby, but I think it’s varietally correct and a stunning value.

My Review: The wine was very dark in color, like an deep purple. On the nose I got a black cherry aroma. The taste was sweet with some tart cherries in there too. It was pretty tannic, medium-bodied, and finished smoothly with no alcoholic taste what so ever. I really liked this wine! It had the body of a red wine and for the same price I usually get a wine with a hot finish but that was not the case with this wine. I'd rate this wine a 9.5 out of 10.

This wine was tasted with dark chocolate and it was good!! The wine flavors changed. More fruit was present and the tannins were reduced which balanced the wine wonderfully. The dark chocolate taste was also altered. Dark chocolate is usually bitter but the wine got rid of all of that and brought out the sweetness of the chocolate. I would highly recommend trying dark chocolate with this wine!

Tasting #28 - Fetzer Cabernet Sauvignon

Name: Fetzer
Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: Mendocino, CA
Country: USA
Year: 2010
Price: $6

Wine Review: Brilliant ruby garnet color. Mild aromas and flavors of cedar and spicy, crusty dark berry pie. This has nice chewy, tart berry and citrus fruit on a rounded medium body with a zesty, cocoa accented finish.

My Review: This wine is dark red in color with strong jammy aromas on the nose. The taste was typical Cab. Sav. with jammy, cherry, and plum flavors. There was a decent dry finish. Overall I liked the wine but it wasn't a favorite. I'd rank this wine a 7 out of 10.

Tasting #27 - Les Piliers Viognier

Name: Les Piliers
Variety: Viognier
Region: Vins de Pays d'Oc
Country: France
Year: 2011
Price: $15

Wine Store Review: Creamed peach and melon fruit mix with glazed pear and mango notes, while just enough bitter orange on the finish keeps this honest.

My Review: This wine is a pale gold color with very floral aromas and hints of apricots. This is one of the more expensive bottles I've had so far and I could definitely tell a difference in the body and balance compared to the five dollar wines I typically drink. I got a sort of a citrus taste along with what I can only describe as being what it would taste like to bite into a flower. I bought this wine after reading in my class textbook that it pairs very well with duck and goose. I am guessing it was the marinade I used because this wine did not compliment the meat or vice vera. The wine was much better on it's on. I liked this wine very much and will give it a score of 9 out of 10.

This wine was tasted with a duck and goose dinner.

Tasting #26 - Madria Sangria Moscato

Name: Madria Sangria
Variety: Moscato
Region: Modesto, California
Country: USA
Year: 2012
Price: $5

Winery Website Review: Our Madria Sangria Moscato offers a tropical, delicious blend of Moscato wine with hints of orange, peach and apple. This white sangria has just the right amount of sweetness and refreshment.

My Review: This wine is very light and almost clear in color. Right away on the nose I got peaches on peaches on peaches and nothing but peaches! It reminded me specifically of the syrup in canned peaches. It is a very sweet wine with a light body. I got a slight peachy taste with a slightly lingering acidic taste on the finish. This wine would be great during the summer or maybe as an aperitif. I enjoyed the tasted of this wine a lot although it was just a tad too sweet. I rate this wine a 7 out of 10.

Tasting #25 - Pinetti Notte Rosé

Name: Pinetti Notte
Variety: Rosé
Region: Sicily
Country: Italy
Year: 2010
Price: $5

Wine Blog Review: The 2010 Pinetti Notte Rosé was wonderful with aromas of fresh strawberries and red raspberries. The flavor profile followed that of the aromas, with strawberries, red raspberries, and on the mid-palate the flavor of rhubarb was present which also brought a nice tartness to the wine.

My Review: The Pinetti Rosé is light and transparent red in color. On the nose I got cherry, strawberry, and raspberry aromas. The initial taste was sweet with hints of strawberries and it had a thin mouth feel. It was a little dry on the finish and a strange aftertaste that I did not like! I'd rate this wine a 3 out of 10

Tasting # 24 - Robert Mondavi Pinot Noir

Name: Robert Mondavi Private Selection
Variety: Pinot Noir
Region: San Joaquin, CA
Country: USA
Year: 2011
Price: $11

Wine Review: Starting with a nose of wild cherries and sage, that carry into the flavors of the wine. Once the first sip hits the mouth the magic begins, layers of black fruit, smokey oak, and plums marry together and become a silky smooth tasting experience. The finish layers the oak and jammy notes together seamlessly with a touch of the oak resurfacing.

My Review: This wine is a dark red, crimson color. On the nose I got a jammy cherry, blackberry aroma with just a hint of spice. When I tasted it without food it seemed a little tannic which covered up some of the flavors. After tasting it with the lasagna I noticed a huge decrease in the tannic component and a increase in the fruit flavors. I was able to detect the cherry and blackberry flavors much better. This is the second pinot noir I've done a tasting on and this one was much better. I'd rate it a 8 out of 10.

This wine was tasted at dinner with lasagna.

Tasting #23 - Umberto Fiore Moscato d'Asti

Name: Umberto Fiore
Variety: Moscato
Region: Piedmont DOCG
Country: Italy
Year: 2010
Price: $10

Wine Review: Extremely aromatic with mild sweetness and vibrant acidity. Semi-sparkling with a famously complex bouquet.

My Review: This wine had a light, pale yellow silvery color. I didn't get much on the nose except a little citrus. It's a very sweet wine. It poured pretty fizzy and definitely had a bubbly feel in my mouth. I got a hint of pineapple and citrus. The wine finished smooth with some lingering sweetness. I didn't love this wine although it was a good moscato. I'd rate it a 6 out of 10.

Tasting #22 - Luccio Moscato d'Asti

Name: Luccio
Variety: Moscato
Region: Piedmont DOCG
Country: Italy
Year: 2010
Price: $10

Wine Review: Luccio Moscato d’Asti is fresh, fragrant, and frizzante with bright, floral aromas that give way to flavors of ripe stone fruit, tangerines, and honey. This wine is concentrated and flavorful, but not overly rich or heavy; sweet, yet balanced.

My Review: Pale yellow in color. On the nose I got a chalky, stone smell with some subtle citrus notes. It was very sweet with a slightly citrus and honey taste and did not linger. I liked the wine but it was a little sweet. I rate this wine a 6 out of 10.

Tasting #21 - St. Joseph's Vidal Blanc Ice Wine

Name: St. Joseph's Vineyard Ice Wine
Variety: Vidal Blanc (Hybrid variety)
Region: Grand River Valley, Ohio
Country: USA
Year: 2009
Price: $30

Winery Review: Made from Vidal blanc.  Rich, late harvest honey and apricot.  Excellence balance and a long finish.  A bargain at the price.

My Review: Straw yellow in color. On the nose I got some floral and tropical fruit notes with a strange sharp scent that may be moldy grass. Sweet and a little bubbly with a full body feel. Hints of honey with a slight dry and acidic finish. Really enjoyed this wine and had a great time tasting it with my Mom. I'd rate this wine 9 out of 10.

Tasting #20 - Fetzer Gewürztraminer

Name: Fetzer
Variety: Gewürztraminer
Region: Mendocino County, CA
Country: USA
Year: 2011
Price: $5

Wine Review: The Fetzer Gewurztraminer, produced in California, is medium bodied and exhibits the aforementioned sweetness common to this varietal. The primarily flavors conveyed on that current of sweetness are apricot and peach. Some people noted a little spice in there as well, though it was not uniformly recognized.

My Review: Pale yellow and slightly golden in color. Very floral on the nose with some honeysuckle. Sweet up front with hints on pineapple and peaches. I detected a little spice. There was a slightly dry finish with a short lingering taste. I enjoyed tasting this wine and would score it a 7 out of 10.

Tasting #19 - Barefoot Pinot Grigio

Name: Barefoot
Variety: Pinot Grigio
Region: Modesto, California
Country: USA
Year: 2012
Price: $5

Wine Review: Tart green apple flavors get down with a white peach undertone. Floral blossoms and citrus aromas do the tango. Light-bodied with a bright finish.

My Review: By far the lightest colored wine I've ever tried. It was almost clear. On the nose I got a tart green apple, citrus, and applesauce aromas. The body was light and a little acidic. I tasted citrus flavors and there were tart green apples on the finish.

Tasting #17 - Beringer Riesling

Name: Beringer Founders' Estate
Variety: Riesling
Region: Napa, California
Country: USA
Year: 2009
Price: $6

Wine Website Review: This is a wonderfully refreshing wine – its ripe peach and apricot flavors are perfectly balanced by a touch of lemon-lime. The brightness and acidity of the wine make it very food-friendly while the enticing peach and apricot flavors make it difficult to have just one glass!

My Review: This wine was pale yellow in color. On the nose I got aromas of citrus and honeysuckle. It has a light, acidic taste along with flavors of citrus and pineapple. It finishes a bit dry with not much of a lingering after taste. This was my first riesling so I don't have anything to compare it to but I throughly enjoyed it.

Tasting #16 - Atlas Cumbres Torrontes

Name: Atlas Cumbres
Variety: Torrontes
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2009
Price: $7

Wine Website Review: Yellow colour with greenish nuances. Very intense aroma of fresh grapes, flower perfume and mature peaches. Fresh in the mouth. Light and easy to drink.

My Review: A very different yellow then any wine I've tried so far. It was a straw yellow or gold color. I got aromas of pineapple, lemon and floral notes on the nose. The lemon was most prominent and reminded me of the lemon head candy. The wine was slightly acidic with hints of lemons. It finished dry with a funky aftertaste that thankfully didn't linger very long. I enjoyed the smell of this wine a lot but was disappointed with the taste.

Tasting #15 - Black Opal Cabernet Merlot

Name: Black Opal
Variety: 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Merlot
Region: Barossa Valley
Country: Australia
Year: 2010
Price: $6

Wine Shop Review: The aromas display excellent regional and varietal characters of berry and spice. These scents follow through with rich cherry and plum flavors, a hint of chocolate and a subtle touch of oak. The flavors develop well and finish with a long finely textured mouth feel.

My Review: This wine was dark red in color. On the nose there was strong aromas of black cherry. The taste was sweet upfront with raspberries. It finished hot and dry with a lingering taste. Overall I enjoyed this wine but it wasn't a favorite.

This wine was tasted at a dinner with lasagna. I felt paired fairly well. I didn't notice as much of a balance of wine and food taste as I did with the Shiraz I wrote about in tasting #14.

Tasting #14 - Lucky Duck Shiraz

Name: Lucky Duck
Variety: Shiraz
Country: Australia
Year: 2012
Price: $4

Wine Review: The Lucky Duck Shiraz pours a rather dark purple with fairly strong aromas of blackberries and a hint of earth and coffee. You take a sip and get more of that sweet blackberry and some lingering jammy plum, with a decent acidity and a hint of spice in the finish. The tannins are actually fairly moderate which was surprising.

My Review: Medium to dark red in color. I smelled aromas of black cherry and blackberry. The taste is powerful upfront with a blast of dark berries and raspberries. It ended with a dry, modest finish and lingered briefly.

This wine was tasted with a pizza dinner. While eating the pizza I also drank some of the wine and noticed a big enhancement on the berry flavors.

Tasting #13 - Santa Julia Tempranillo

Name: Santa Julia
Variety: Tempranillo
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2012
Price: $10

Winery Review:  A deep fruit nose opens to rich black fruits on the palate - plums and figs, with hints of vanilla and tobacco.

My Review: This wine is a deep red in color. On the nose I got black pepper, cherry, raspberries, and a hint of banana and cherry Coca-Cola. It was hard to pick out pick out any other tastes over the pepperiness flavor although maybe there was a hint of raspberries. It finished dry and didn't linger long. This wine reminder me a lot of the wine I did in tasting #12. Overall I enjoyed this wine.

Tasting # 11- Moscato Rosé

Name: Jellybean
Variety: Moscato Rosé
Region: Veneto
Country: Italy
Year: 2011
Price: $8

Winemaker Review: A hint of effervescence and a big hit of Strawberry Parfait overlay lush notes of red berries, peach and apricot in our Moscato Rosé. A characterful blend of sunshine-loving Moscato and Raboso grapes from northeastern Italy’s Veneto, this lightly sparkling charmer enchants with a vibrant pink color and abundant berry notes to match.

My Review: Light red in color. On the nose there were sweet floral and banana notes with hints of strawberries. I tasted light strawberries and citrus but the mid-palate and finish were very hollow. I was not impressed with this wine and neither was my girlfriend when she gave it to me since she didn't like it either. There was also a funky aftertaste.

Tasting #10 - Champagne

Name: André
Variety: Champagne
Region: Modesto, California
Country: USA
Year: 2012
Price: $6

Winemakers Review: Fruity flavors with a dry mouthfeel yield a lively mid-palate and finish.

My Review: Pale Yellow in color. There was heavy citrus notes on the nose. It was obviously bubbly with a pineapple and citrus taste. Being a brut champagne there was a dryness to it but it wasn't terrible. It ended with a lingering citrus flavor.

Tasting #9 - Merlot

Name: Bay Bridge
Variety: Merlot
Region: Livermore and Ripon, California
Country: USA
Year: 2012

Review: Deep ruby color. Red berry, fruit gum, and spiced nut aromas. A brisk entry leads to a fruity medium body of berry jam and pencil flavors. Finishes with a quick powdery tannin fade.

Mr Review: A dark red color with a warm feeling on the nose and hints of cherry and spices. Light flavors at first open to cherries, raspberries, and cranberries. It finishes on an acidic and mildly dry note that does not linger long.

Tasting #8 - Chardonnay #2

Name: Mars and Venus
Variety: Chardonnay
Region: Castilla
Country: Spain
Year: 2011
Price: $5.95

Vintage Cellar Review: A very nice value Chardonnay that comfortably over-delivers vs. its modest price tag. No oak here, just bushels of clean, crisp, Chardonnay apple and stone fruit with a hint of caramelized pineapple. Juicy and clean, this is a mid-weight white that's just perfect for parties or weeknight sipping.

My Review: The wine had a pale, silvery color. The aromas weren't very strong so I wasn't able to detect anything. It was a light initial taste of citrus and pineapples. The ending was a little dry.

Tasting #7 - Tempranillo

Name: Finca del Castillo
Variety: Tempranillo
Region: La Mancha
Country: Spain
Year: 2011
Price: $4.95

Vintage Cellar Review: Rooty, spicy and baked on the nose, with the aromas that lean towards raisin. The palate is more gritty and acidic, with raisin, cola, and spice flavors. Darkens up on the finish, with is long and peppery, with adequate juiciness and a final note of tomato.

My Review: The wine was a dark red color. My first sniff really took me by surprise. There were powerful, strong aromas that I wasn't expecting. I smelled some red berries (like cherries, raspberries, and maybe strawberries) along with a cherry cola aroma. There was a spicy taste to this wine. It was a long bitter, peppery taste that had a dry finish. Overall I enjoyed this wine because it is different from everything I have tried thus far.

Tasting #6 - Moscato

Name: Bartenura
Variety: Muscat
Region:
Country: Italy
Year: 2010
Price: $4.95

Vintage Cellar Review: The inviting apricot preserves, honey, butter, and roasted almond aromas of this semi-sparkler pull you right in. It's on the sweet side, with stone-fruit flavors kept alive by decent acidity. The palate bubbles and tingles and maintains its balance. Fine as an aperitif or wine dessert.

My Review: It was a light, transparent yellow. I noticed when I swirled the glass bubbles would from up around the edges. There were melon and maybe kiwi aromas on the nose. This wine was very sweet with a crisp pineapple taste. It was also kind of sparkly and ended with a light sweet finish that didn't linger.

Tasting #5 - Soave

Name: La Cappuccina Soave
Variety: 100% Garganega
Region: Veneto
Country: Italy
Year: 2011
Price: $7.95

Shop Review: Bright straw yellow in color. Delicate on the nose, with notes of flowers and almonds. Dry, well-structured and delicately fruity, with hints of bitter almonds on the finish that is typical of Garganega-based wines.

My Review: Pale yellow color. I smelled citrusy and floral aromas with maybe a hint of pear. It was a strong flavor right from the get go, acidic, and bitter with only a slight fruity taste. It was a little dry as well. I liked the wine
but it didn't have a lot of taste to me.

This wine was not tasted with food.

Tasting #4 - Chardonnay

Name: Rex Goliath
Variety: Chardonnay
Region:  Madera, California
Country: USA
Year: 2011
Price: $6

Critic Review: Rex Goliath Chardonnay is a true sun-kissed California Chardonnay with bold aromas of apple and pear, combined with the classic spices of Grandma's apple pie. Tropical fruit, pineapple and melon flavors combine with well-integrated layer of creme brûlée and a smattering of vanilla.

My review: Initially the smell was really strange. It was kinda funky although the more I "sniffy sniffed" the more I was able to detect a citrusy, banana smell. Something still lingered that wasn't fruity though it was maybe like a wet moldy grass smell. It wasn't overpowering but was definitely funky. While tasting I detected hints of pineapple and banana with an overall citrusy taste. There was an acidic taste followed by a dry lingering aftertaste.

Tasting #3-  Sweet Red

Name: Opera Prima
Variety: Red Blend
Region: La Mancha
Country: Spain
Year: 2010
Price: $4.95

Shop Review: Doesn't try to hide its warm-climate terroir, with a soft texture framing jammy-sweet black raspberry, cherry, red currant, root beer and sweet tea. Drink now.

My Review: Right from the beginning there were sweet berry aromas most likely cherries and strawberries. There was a red licorice and strawberry flavors. If there was a wine made for little kids who like sugary drinks this would be the one. The taste was a little too sweet for my liking and did not linger long.

Tasting #2  Pinot Noir

Name: The Naked Grape
Variety: Pinot Noir
Region: Modesto, California
Country: USA
Year: 2011
Price: $6

Wine Critic Review: This is a light, jewel red colored wine with gads of ripe red fruit on the nose.  The aromas are primarily cherry and red plum, but there’s also a Diet Coke characteristic to the nose.  The palate is fresh and fruity with ripe cherry and pomegranite flavors.  The tannins are a little too light, in my opinion, but the acidity is good.  The finish, short.  Very short.  But, if fresh and fruity is what you like, then you may enjoy this pinot noir.

My Review: Great taste. There was a cherry and berry aroma. It was sweet berry flavor at first but then the dry and slightly acidic taste quickly follows. There was a dry lingering taste but it didn't stay around long.

I had the wine with dinner which consisted of cheese and crackers, lasagna, and a squash and mushroom dish. The wine paired well in my opinion.

Tasting #1 - Encostas do Lima Vinho Verde

Name: Encostas do Lima Vinho Verde
Variety80% Loureiro, 20% Trajadura
Region: Lima
Country: Portugal
Year: 2010
Price: $4.95

Shop reviewPale golden silver color. Bright floral aromas of peaches, raspberry and honeysuckle with a soft, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a crisp, tart citrus and talc accented finish. A delightful sipper that is sure to please.

My review: Very light pale yellow appearance. The smell reminded me of flowers but I couldn't say which ones. There wasn't an overwhelming taste. It was light, fruity, and citrusy. Compared to other wine I've tasted it was bubblier. The finish was light and didn't linger.

I tasted this wine without any food.

My personal experience with wine thus far.

I haven't had much experience with wine so far. I've had several glasses of several different varieties most of which I can't remember the names of. My experiences so far have been having a glass at my Grandma's house with dinner or tasting wine at home with my Mom. I like the taste of wine and I want to continue to build my palate through the Geography of Wine course and exploring on my own.

Up to this point I have preferred the taste of white wine. I definitely like the sweeter, crisper taste as opposed to the dry, "harsh" taste of red wine. I know this is because I am just getting started in my wine drinking and I know the more I drink and build my palate the more I'll like red wine.

In this wine class I'm interested in learning about the entire wine making process from the grapes on the vine to drinking a glass. I want to know why different regions affect wine making. I've already found a great interest in craft beers and I hope that through this class and my own experiences I can build a similar interest in wine.
